Big shoulders / William Jamerson.

Jamerson, William. (Author).

Summary:

At seventeen, Nick Radzinski has a choice of staying in Hamtramck to serve out probation or join the Civilian Conservation Corps. The CCC put young men to work restoring natural resources, building roads and fighting forest fires. On a cold April day in 1937, he arrives at Camp Raco, in Michigan's remote Upper Peninsula. He has one chance to prove that he can act responsibly and shed his reputation as a thief. Big Shoulders is the story of Nick's year in camp and his attempt to handle the challenges of living and working in a military setting. He encounters trouble from day one when First Sergeant Mulligan accuses him of shoplifting. An over sized bully makes his life miserable and Nick suspects a wily supply sergeant of trying to frame him. In spite of the risk, Nick puts his place in camp on the line when he decides to go it alone to catch a thieving scoundrel. Nick's daring moves create havoc and suspense in the backwoods. The future of the camp rests on his shoulders. -- Provided by publisher.
