The eye that never sleeps : how Detective Pinkerton saved President Lincoln / words by Marissa Moss ; illustrations by Jeremy Holmes.
The object of every investigation ... is to come to the whole truth. Allan Pinkerton (1819-1884) was one of America's greatest detectives. Born in the slums of Scotland, he grew up with very little but had a keen eye that allowed him to notice things that others did not. On the run from local police, he fled to America. There he helped catch a gang of counterfeiters near the city of Chicago. The police were so impressed by his investigative skills that he became the first detective at the Chicago police department. Pinkerton went on to open his own detective agency. He showed his agents how to follow suspects, disguise themselves, and search for clues. Above all, he taught his agents to hunt for the truth. His methods worked so well that the Pinkerton Agency became the most successful detective agency in the country. By the 1850s, they had solved more than 300 murders and recovered millions of dollars in stolen money! But in 1860, Pinkerton received his biggest case yet. There were rumors going around that a gang of rebels wanted to kill Abraham Lincoln before he could be sworn in as president. Pinkerton knew he had to stop them. He enlisted his top agents and came up with a plan. With bold panels of art that match the story's thrilling pace, The Eye That Never Sleeps tells of Pinkerton's adventures as a detective and demonstrates how the truth always wins out. -- From dust jacket.
